What If...A Multiverse Existed

It's always a fun question, right? What if...: I had said yes instead of no, applied for this job over a different job, stayed home instead of leaving, walked away instead of remaining, decided not to take drugs, decided not to start drinking, I was responsible...

It's important not to drown yourself in what could be. We only ask this question as a means of finding closure in our everyday choices. It stems from a level of insecurity. "Was I right about my choices?". Instead of going down that psychotic rabbit hole, I'm going to tackle possibly one of the biggest mysteries known to Man's imagination.

Does a Multiverse Exist?

We only ask ourselves this after reading such stories as Marvel comics or DC comics or any other science-fiction writer can drum up quite the satisfying story. Where different iterations of your favorite character all exist in their world but share their existence in a vacuum of galaxies known as the Multiverse (makes for great cameos).

I have previously shared that I ascribe to the Christian faith. So, I will be basing my thesis of a "multiverse" on that faith. This will either be one of the most exciting things you've read in a while (maybe), or it will be anticlimactic and very plain (stick around to find out).

Genesis 1

According to the Christian faith, our world, our universe, started with God. "In the beginning God..."

We then are given a day by day, step by step design for our world with details included.

Day 1: Day and Night (darkness and light)

Day 2: Heaven

Day 3: Earth with Vegetation

Day 4: Planets and Stars (Evening and Morning)

Day 5: Birds and Aquatic creatures

Day6: Land animals and Humans

Day 7: Rest

From here we continue on with the rest of history. Humanity falls into sin, cursed with death, becomes an absolute monster, is wiped from the earth, is restored through Noah and his family, then becomes multiple nations, then God chooses a man call Abram (Abraham) to drop his livelihood and become the Father of a great nation, fulfills this promise with God and becomes the bloodline through Jesus the Christ is born into our world to be the spotless Lamb to save us from death. After Jesus death, burial, resurrection and ascension back to heaven, humanity takes the Lord's gospel and spreads it far and wide to develop civilizations in the Christian faith.

This summary however does not completely account for mans wicked heart and the rebellion that continues to be produced. Our history is not a perfect one and that's the point of the Gospel. The Bible. Humanity is not perfect because we are cursed.

But how does this fit into the idea of a multiverse?

First off, "multiverse" is an abbreviation of "Multiple Universes". That alone tells us that if a multiverse does exist, we can measure the other universes based off our own. We know Earth is part of a series of planets in our Solar System (as designed by God on Day 4), and that our Solar system is part of the Milky Way galaxy. But the galaxy itself is not the whole universe.

It's hard to think about size when the world (our planet) is big enough for all of us few billion people to exist on. We often don't look up into the night sky, see all of those stars, and just think about how small we really are in the vast expansion of the heavens.

Nonetheless, by this standard of measurement, we can come to our first conclusion.

If there are multiple universes, they are completely unreachable.

Next, the concept of multiple universes, as mentioned above, is a way to cope with our decisions. In another universe, maybe we made better choices. I personally always loved the alternative reality idea, what if Adam didn't eat the fruit of knowledge of good and evil and instead remained faithful to God's command?

It's impossible for us to say what would have happened since we are fallen people. All we know is the sin that we are. The perfectness we were in Adam no longer exists, so any alternative reality is completely unfathomable.

Looking at human history, we also see repetitious behavior in societies. Kingdoms rise; kingdoms fall. Leaders are raised; leaders fall. Humanity suffers constantly, but salvation is offered.

Bottom line, we try to be original but end up repeating the mistakes of our ancestors.

Without becomes sacrilegious or blasphemous towards The Bible, I must state this clearly. There is no basis for any of this in the Bible and no such evidence for it outside of our imagination.

That being said, let's say hypothetically God created multiple universes. Starting the same way each time and ending the same way each time. We know by the Genesis account that everything was good, so the origin doesn't need to change. But like us, like Adam, we are prone to fulfill the desires of our flesh. Therefore, we can conclude that every universe would end up like ours. The story doesn't change no matter how many times you try to retell it. So, the conclusion of alternative realities, based off the measure of our own history and behavior, is that if other universes existed, they'd all be mirrors of our universe (which ruins the point of other universes existing).

Loophole

Since by our own merit of measurement we can conclude that multiple universes can't exist, the only way that they could is if there was a god for each universe. I tread lightly with this thought but bear with me...

The Lord God created this world and us. Presides over our entire universe holding every atom together perfectly in perfect design sustaining the life and order of the cosmos as we know them. That doesn't change. We are fixed under the sovereignty of God and He told us there were no other gods but Him. Only Him alone is our provider, our life, our will.

If...if...there were other universes, the God of that universe would preside over it and maybe the story would be different. But there are two conclusions to draw from this.

1- that's a big "what if" and again, based on previous measurements we can be assured that the story will always be the same, so it defeats the point of the questions premise.

2- Because they are separate universes that are just as vast as ours, there is no conceivable way, supernatural or natural, to access them. To break outside the borders of our own creator is not something we are even capable of. We are but clay molded by the potter (Isaiah 64:8).

Conclusion

It is impossible for other universes to exist. Multiverses only exist in our minds.

But the human mind is also limitless in what it can conceive. Perhaps while other universes do not exist, reflections of us still do...in the eyes of each other. As a few billion people perceive each other in a few billion different ways.
